Why Might I Need Nail Surgery?

You may be advised to consider nail surgery if you experience:

  • Repeated episodes of ingrown toenails
  • Infection or inflammation around the nail
  • Thickened or distorted nails that cause pain or pressure
  • Persistent discomfort despite regular podiatry treatment

What is nail surgery?

Nail surgery is a minor procedure carried out under local anaesthetic to treat problem toenails — most commonly ingrown or thickened nails that do not respond to routine care.

During the procedure, part or all of the affected nail is carefully removed. A chemical called phenol is then applied to prevent that section of the nail from regrowing, reducing the chance of the problem returning.

Benefits of Nail Surgery

  • Permanent solution to recurrent ingrown nails
  • Quick procedure with minimal downtime
  • Performed safely under local anaesthetic
  • Long-lasting comfort and improved nail appearance

What to Expect During your visit

  1. Consultation & Assessment – Your podiatrist will assess your nail, discuss treatment options, and ensure surgery is appropriate for you.
  2. Local Anaesthetic – The toe is numbed so that the procedure is completely pain-free.
  3. Nail Removal – The problem section (or the entire nail, if needed) is removed with precision.
  4. Phenol Application – Swab-It Phenol is applied to the nail base to prevent regrowth.
  5. Dressing & Aftercare – The toe is dressed, and you’ll be given full advice on home care and redressing.

Aftercare

  • Keep the dressing clean and dry until your first redressing appointment.

  • Expect some mild discomfort once the anaesthetic wears off — this is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.

  • Healing usually takes 4–8 weeks, depending on the individual and the extent of surgery.

  • You’ll be given follow-up appointments to monitor healing and support recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at pocklingtonpodiatry@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

When a part of the nail pierces the skin causing it to become painful, red or inflammed.

These are mainly from poor nail cutting techniques, tight fitting shoes or even genetic.

Yes, it may do. With proper treatment and aftercare these can settle on their own.

Ensure you wear appropriate fitting shoes that aren't too tight whilst maintaining good personal hygiene.

You are not responding to conservative treatment, experiencing persistent pain and reoccurring infections.

We numb the toe with a Local Aenesthic so you won't feel anything. A chemical known as Phenol is applied to the portion of nail removed which will prevent it regrowing in that area.

This varies on the surgery you require. For a Partial Nail Avulsion this can take 6-8 weeks or for a Total Nail Avulsion this can take between 6-12 weeks approximately.
